The Lovecats

Animated Lyric Video

For this university project, the brief was to create a motion graphics lyric video that visually interpreted a chosen song. I selected “The Lovecats” by The Cure — a track known for its playful tone, quirky rhythm, and strong visual identity tied to the post-punk / new wave era.

I developed a handcrafted visual style using scanned textures, hand-drawn typography, and collage-inspired composition to echo the analogue, DIY aesthetic of the early 80s. Each frame was illustrated and animated manually in After Effects, allowing the motion to feel imperfect, tactile, and intentionally non-digital. Animation timing was synced closely to the rhythm and lyrical phrasing of the song, creating visual emphasis through movement.

The final video delivers an energetic and expressive interpretation of The Lovecats, using motion, texture, and typography to amplify the attitude of the song rather than simply displaying lyrics. The project showcased my early foundations in animation, timing, and visual narrative — skills that continue to influence my design practice today.
